Drawn from year groups throughout the school, thirteen pupils participated in the Youth Speaks Competition sponsored by the Rotary Club of Kirkcudbright. The venue was the impressive Cochran Hall and the talks featured an eclectic range of topics including ‘My Bad Luck on the Stage’ and ‘Women in Aviation’. The winners shown with Rotary President Allan Ross were: Hazel Dempster (Right), of the Junior S1 to S3 section of the Competition whose subject was ‘The Art of Public Speaking’, and Lucy Davies (Left), of the senior S4 to S6 section was who spoke about ‘Britain and the Weather’. In announcing the awards, the lead judge for the event, Richard Ryall, commended all speakers for their efforts and passion for their chosen subjects. The prizes were presented by President Allan, who commented upon all that Rotary is able to achieve while working with young people in various sponsored events and activities. In his closing remarks, MC for the evening, Gavin Scott, thanked everyone who had helped make the event a success, and made special mention of Miss McEwan from the Academy for her contribution.
