Rotary in action inTurkey
After the devastating earthquakes that hit Turkey in February 2023, causing 50,000 deaths, Rotarians in the three Rotary districts in the region decided they needed to act, in immediate response and also to provide sustainable support for the future.
On 26 October Emre Öztürk and Canan Ersöz, two Rotarians who lived through the disaster and were influential in the response, talked about it to our Rotary district members in a Zoom meeting.
Immediate aid was provided by excavators and other machinery and by essential items from local Rotary clubs loaded into 200 trucks. A tent city with 100 tents was rapidly established and distribution hubs were set up to provide daily meals. Altogether an astonishing 20 million meals were provided. Shelterbox was active from the start and provided 2,000 tents and other essentials in rural areas.
A total of 2.526 million USD of aid came in to the Rotary districts and by October 2.378 million USD has been used in the recovery effort by the Rotary clubs, in Adana and other areas affected. Two container villages have been built, each container comprising living accommodation for a family. Medical centres were also built and equipped with donated medical devices. A veterinary clinic was also built and equipped. Temporary classrooms were provided for the children who lost their schools and farmers were provided with tractors. Seed potatoes were donated to 500 farming families.
