Huge fun with a serious purpose
Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA)
This year we sponsoried three students, Liam-Ashley, Tyler and Danial for the event on 9 to 14 August. And they loved it!
In the middle of nowhere, but near Dorking, sits the High Ashurst Outdoor Education Centre. Our Rotary District 1145 takes this over for a week every August, for a course run on their behalf by Surrey Outdoor Learning and Development, for young people aged 14 to 17.
Sixty places are available for the 83 clubs in our Rotary District to sponsor candidates. To bag spaces you have to be agile, so we whizz out invitations to local secondary schools, and youth organisations for them to put forward nominations.
Our criteria for selecting participants lean towards those whom we believe will benefit most, and possibly are from a deserving background. This year we are sponsoring three students, Liam-Ashley, Tyler and Danial for the event on 9 to 14 August.
The course is designed to develop personal self-confidence and self-esteem by challenging participants to step outside their comfort zone and to develop leadership and social skills. Activities include rock climbing, high wire, kayaking, raft building, and orienteering.
We have yet to sponsor a student who hasn’t benefitted from the course and at the end of the present one our three students told Dion how much they had enjoyed it and how much they had learned.

Technology Tournament led by Twickenham Rotary Club
more A Technology Tournament is run every year for schools in Richmond Borough. It is led by Twickenham Rotary Club with help from TuT and other local Rotary Clubs and up to twelve of the local schools. This year's Tournament took place on 19th March 2019
Chess at Heathfield Junior School
more Rotary Club members help with teaching and encouraging enthusiastic pupils in their regular Chess sessions, which have become very popular.
Madogo School experinces Kew Gardens and London
more In April 2012 two teachers and two pupils from Madago school in Kenyan spent two weeks in Waldegrave School for Girls as part of a cultural exchange between the two schools. Our club offered to show them higlights of Kew Gardens and Museum of London.

Rotary Young Chef competition 2015
more 12 students, 8 from Waldegrave School and 4 from Twickenham Academy showed their skills by each preparing a 2-course meal in the competition at Waldegrave School on 10 November 2015.

more Twelve aspiring young chefs competed in the facilities provided by Waldegrave School for Girls and produced mouth-watering results. The winner will progress to the next, Rotary District 1140, round.
