Record teams in Swimathon
The Richmond Borough Swimathon 2009 took place on Saturday 26th September at the Teddington Pools and Fitness Centre. Organised by the Rotary Club of Twickenham, a record 16 teams took part all swimming to raise money either for their own organisation or for a charity.
Newland House School and The Richmond and Twickenham Caternains both entered three teams, St Catherine's School and Cantanti Camerati two teams with Homelink, The Esperanza Trust for Argentina, The Mulberry Centre, The Otakar Kraus Music Trust, Teddington Choral Society and The Redway Drive Association with one each.
Her Worship The Mayor of Richmond, Cllr Celia Hodges attended, talked to some of the participants, watched teams swimming and was briefed by Twickenham Rotary's Swimathon organiser, Barry Buttenshaw: "It was an honour having the Mayor attend and it gave a lift to the swimmers, including me!" he said. The pools were donated for the event by Richmond Borough Council. "The staff here are magnificent," said Barry Buttenshaw, "nothing is too much trouble."
This annual event is growing steadily and is a great way for organisations, clubs, charities and others to raise money for themselves or for other good causes. Before this year's event the Swimathon had raised over
