Veterans D-Day Museum trip - 20 March 2024
A group of keen veterans were treated to a coach trip and friends also went along, to The D-Day Museum Portsmouth on 20 March 2024. Organised by Epsom & Ewell Royal British Legion and Epsom Rotary.
After some refreshments on arrival we had a guided tour of the "Overlord Embroidery," which was sewn 60 years ago to commemorate the allied landings in France in June 1944. The Overlord Embroidery tells the story of D-Day and the Battle of Normandy in 34 extraordinary hand-stitched panels with a total length of 83 metres. Lord Dulverton commissioned the embroidery in 1968. He set up an advisory committee including retired senior officers from the army, navy and air force to help him with the project. Together they decided what events the embroidery would represent. Sandra Lawrence, a young British artist, designed the embroidery. She looked at hundreds of wartime photographs as she researched the subjects she had to portray.
Lunch was at around 1pm in the Dulverton Room arranged by the museum followed by a fascinating talk from a guide on the secrecy surrounding the invasion, and then the was an opportunity to could the museum, finishing with a group photo outside, before heading home.
A most memorable and enjoyable day.
