Club Heat of Young Photographer 28th Feb 2015

Club Heat of Young Photographer 2015

On Saturday 28th February Mike Hume and David Smith judged the Young Photographer competition with the theme "Light Up The Community" and the results and judges comments are as follows:-

Intermediate Competitors (age 11 to 13)

Overall the judges were very impressed both as to the quality of all the pictures submitted and the interpretation and skills being demonstrated, particularly when taking into account the students ages. Given the high standards it proved to be a very hard task to judge the winners and the judges decided to award 1st 2nd and 3rd places. All winning students are from Rosebery School and their entries are attached.

The winner was Isobel Craig . The quality of Isobel's photography, the presentation and the use of light was excellent. The judges also considered that the interpretation was excellent.

In second place the judges chose Sophie Rose's compositions. The judges were particularly impressed with the quality of photography and the treatment of the subject matter combined with its interpretation.

Third place was awarded to Saranya Umashanker. The thought behind the photographs particularly impressed the judges.

Senior Competitors (age 14 to 17)

Again the judges were very impressed with the both the quality of photography and interpretation of the theme. Again it was a very close run competition and fine distinctions had to be drawn, so much so that the judges wished to have 4 winners:-

First place was awarded to Ariel Buhlmann of Rosebery School (photos attached). The judges very much liked the way light and content were dealt with. They appreciated the very tricky compositions and the skill required to achieve the shots. The 3 photographs were very artistically pleasing, with an impressive natural look combined with excellent interpretation.

In second place the judges chose the photos taken by Brooke Holden of Rosebery School (unfortunately digital copy photos were not supplied). The judges commented that the pictures dealt very sympathetically with the subject matter and demonstrated a good deal of technical knowledge.

Third place was awarded to Stephanie Winarto of Epsom College (photos attached). The judges were impressed with good knowledge of craft and Photoshop and they particularly liked the treatment of the tower bridge image

4th place was awarded to Morgan Hawley of Rosebery School (photos attached).

The judges commented that the pictures and interpretation was both impressive and artistic and the entry would have been a real contender if not for the light over-exposed merry go round photo.
