The Community Projects Group is a group comprising members of our club, Ewell Rotary. Leatherhead Rotary, Epsom Rotaract Club and our supporters. The group work together on hands on local community projects.
Our final project for 2012 was the clearing of the garden at Seeability Leatherhead of leaves and debris at the end of November and we plan to return in April 2013 to undertaken some planting and further garden maintenance work.
Our most recent major project was revovation and decoration works at Pitstop Day Drop in centre for the homeless, Leatherhread. This project completed in May 2012 and pictures taken of members of the team taking part on day 1 and the before state of various rooms can be seen in the slide show accessed from this link. Please see our home and news page for more information on this project and for more information about Pitstop their web site can be accessed from this link.
Prior to Pitstop the group undertook the re-decoration and garden maintenance work at the Stephen Woods Centre, Blenheim Road, Epsom KT19 9BA. Again please see our home and news page for information and details about this project which started in November 2010. The centre was re-opened by the Mayor of Epsom and Ewell on the 14th May 2011. We are always looking at possible new projects and anyone interested in joining us should contact Tony Axelrod on 07986 947974.
Our group returned to St Ebbas Wildlife Garden in May 2012 for light maintenance work and we will be back for a day in October 2012. Over 2009/10 our group completely renovated the garden, which is now a fantastic resource for the use of St Ebbas patients and their families. The garden was re-opened by the Mayor of Epsom and Ewell Borough Council in May 2010 and its day to maintenance is undertaken by a St Ebbas volunteer. We plan to return annually to keep up the garden maintenance.
In 2010 the group undertook at the Riding for the Disabled Centre, Horton Lane work on the boundary between the Centre and the rennovated St Ebbas wildlife garden which the group also worked on, changing to .
This project was completed over 3 work days finishing in October 2010 and involved both clearing the vast amount of rubbish, debris, thick undergrowth, brambles and low branches of trees along the boundary line between 2 of the paddocks within the Centre and the St Ebbas Hospital Garden. A considerable amount of land is now open for horses within the paddocks to use as shelter beneath the trees along the boundary. Below are some more pictures of the boundary line before work commenced.
On Saturday 17th July 2010 the Group started work and were able to completely clear the boundary with one of the paddocks. We were lucky with the weather and we were able to use the barbecue at the Centre for lunch. below are some photos of the team and of the boundary after clearance had been completed.
Day 2 of the project took place on the 21st August, when we were able to completely clear most of the remaining boundary. We were again lucky with the weather remaining dry and a barbecue lunch was again enjoyed. Below are some photos of the team on the 21st August.
On the 2nd October 2010 we completed the project and cleared the Wildlife Garden ready for the winter at St Ebbas Hospital and we planted 2000 crocus bulbs at St Ebbas as part of the Rotary "Focus on the Crocus" campaign, to set a world record for bulb planting in aid of Thanks for Life to eradicate Polio throughout the world. The latest press release for this event can be accessed here. You can also watch a short video about the event below.
