On the passing of Tony Man earlier in 2022 the Man family requested that the Centenary Charity Golf Day be dedicated to Tony.
The weather on 18 May was ideal for golf – warm, sunny and little wind. The golf course was also in excellent condition.
On the day 70 golfers played in the event – 28 members of Croham Hurst Golf Club of which 10 were lady members, 21 Chinese golfers, four members of Croydon Rotary Club and 20 others.
The reception desk was manned by Rosemary Man, Tony’s widow, Linda Stroud, Tony’s eldest daughter and Barbara Harker, Secretary of Croydon Rotary Club. Golfers who registered were given their card, a programme for the day and a bottle of water and a banana, kindly donated by Kuen Fai Liu.
Following registration golfers enjoyed a bacon roll with coffee or tea provided by Croham Hurst before going to the first tee. Paul Man, Tony’s son, acted as starter and Terry Stroud, Linda’s husband took photos of all the starters. Four members of Croydon Rotary Club played on the day including President Oumesh Sauba (not pictured).
The golf day was a major fund-raising activity of the Centenary Year. The charity to benefit from the fund raising was the CRISIS Skylight Centre in Croydon which deals with homelessness. This has been the Rotary Club's harity for the past three Rotary years. Money on the golf day was raised in a number of ways:
· By golfers taking part in the event (includes a charity supplement);
· By non-golfers attending the dinner in the evening (includes a charity supplement);
· Sponsorship of a hole – 12 holes were sponsored by Rotarians and other businesses;
· A Raffle held at the dinner – all raffle prizes were donated;
· Donations.
After expenses a total of £4,580 was raised on the day – an excellent result. President Oumesh will be presenting the Crisis Skylight Centre Director, Christine Eyers, with a cheque at the Presidents Handover Lunch on 28 June 2022.
Following the golf, a dinner was held in the evening attended by golfers and Rotarians who had not played along with their guests. A total of 100 people attended the dinner – the maximum that the venue could hold. Demand was so great some people could not participate. At the end of the dinner and following the raffle run by Rotarian Richard Ford the prize-giving took place. President Umesh Sauba presented prizes as follows:
· A Trophy to the Lady with the Highest Stableford Score – Claire Wilton; (32 points)
· A Trophy to the Gentleman with the Highest Stableford Score – Keith Man; (40 points)

The prize giving concluded with the presentation of a special trophy to honour Tony Man.
This trophy was presented by Rosemary Man (Tony’s widow) flanked by her 3 children – Paul, Linda and Catherine, to the golfer (lady or gentleman) with the lowest aggregate gross score on all Par 3 holes. The winner was Lei Yeow with 17 strokes.
The evening concluded with a vote of thanks by Tony’s son Paul and a toast to his father.
Thank you to all who contributed in any way to a successful and memorable occasion.
