Carlo Gesualdo, Prince of Venosa (c1561 – 1613) occupies a unique place in the history of music, being both an accomplished, original composer and murderer.
Known in his lifetime as “il musical macellaio di Venosa” (the musical butcher of Venosa), his advanced use of unorthodox harmonies in his madrigals and church music (possibly reflecting his inner torments), are considered ahead of their time and his striking music occupies a singular place in the bridge between Renaissance and Baroque styles.
In his presentation, Kevin Painting surveys the colourful and troubled life of Gesualdo and his rediscovery by later generations of musicians.
