Regrettably since the problems with the Middle East War has occurred Ukraine has tended to have been overlooked. The fighting continues and there are frequent air raid attacks on many of the major towns and cities, with school children spending a great deal of their time with the women and small children in the shelters.
School now takes place in the shelters for much of the time and brings problems in ensuring that the children, teaching and administrative staff have food and drink and can be kept warm for the periods when they are sheltering from the attacks. There is currently a drive being carried out by a number of Rotary Clubs to provide drinking fountains so that water is available constantly for the children and will alleviate the need for vast amounts of bottled water to be made available at all times.
Dr Philip’s wife showed us a large bag of small babies hats that local people in Newbury are knitting on a regular basis to ensure that the infant’s heads can be kept warm when they are hours underground.
They were all due to be sent with the supplies we had taken down and it was interesting to discuss the work that Dr John is currently involved in with some Rotary International overseas projects in Africa in addition to his ongoing involvement with Ukraine.
We received a great deal of information that we were able to relate to our club members and are now currently collecting further items so that we can continue to help the war effort in Ukraine, knowing that the items sent will help the medical staff to care for the continuing need to treat the war casualties as this war continues.
