The purpose of the visit was to present a donation to the Centre for all the amazing work that is carried out there to care and rehabilitate people who are struggling with various disabilities, often caused by accidents, or illness, an example is a stroke which has caused life changing events for people who in some instances are not very old.
We were presenting a donation of £5000 for the Rehabilitation Centre.
We had previously presented £5000 for a Bugzzi wheelchair , the money was raised in conjunction with the Staines Rotary Club and presented to QEF in the previous year.
We understand that this wheelchair has been donated to a little girl with cerebral palsy and allows her to integrate with other children and to play and have a much more normal existence. We understand that she loves chasing her brother around now, this would not have been possible without the Bugzzi.
We were all very impressed with the facilities at the Rehabilitation Centre during our tour and the amazing dedication of the staff to try and encourage people to get back into some degree of normality.
The physiotherapist showed us all the rehabilitation work they are able to do with their clients to improve their situation and encourage them to cope with living on their own, including cooking and general welfare.
In many cases helping them to get back into their previous or a new working environment, this can only be done when people’s general confidence has been given a boost and the staff are dedicated to securing the best outcome in every case for the patients.
Many of the patients attend Arts and Crafts classes and painting is especially helpful to the patients who may have sustained vision problems from a stroke or following an accident. We were presented with a painting to thank us at Ashford Rotary for our donation which had been executed by one of the present patients.
We were also very impressed by the facilities available for the families and other visitors to the Centre. There were plenty of places for them to sit and visit with the patients both inside and out in the spacious grounds and a kitchen where teas and coffees etc could be made and enjoyed in a relaxed atmosphere.
We were especially grateful to Jolene, one of the Event’s Organizers and her helper and the Members of the Nursing Staff who showed us around that day. We all had a most enjoyable and informative tour of this most impressive building with its wonderful facilities which had been officially opened by Sophie, who is now the Countess of Edinburgh and is one of our locally living Royals.
