Ashford Rotary Club have been supplying year 5 children in the primary Schools in Ashford and Stanwell for some considerable time. We place orders for the dictionary4Life (D4L) Literacy project in December and these are delivered to us in the following summer so that we can arrange to deliver and present the dictionaries to the pupils during the new Autumn term.
These dictionaries are a bespoke version of the Usborne Illustrated Dictionary and comprise of 1000 illustrations, 10,000 entries and 20,000 definitions in full colour. The book has a space for the child’s name on the flyleaf in a Rotary Information panel. We request the schools to insert all the children’s names into the dictionaries and then we arrange for two Rotarians to visit the schools to present the personalised dictionaries to the children of Year 5. At the presentation we tell the children about ROTARY and all our charity activities not just in our local community but also in our overseas work and fund raising.
The schools involved are:
We fund raise during the year to raise the monies for these dictionaries which regrettably rise in price as time proceeds.
We are very fortunate to have donations from some of the local Spelthorne and County Councillors and this year thank Joanne Sexton, Michelle Ashton, Simon Bhadye, Naz Islam and Robert Evans who have all helped us with donations for this project. In time we hope to persuade all the Councillors to contribute as they see the value of this project.
Literacy is so important and we cannot expect our young students to be able to deal with all the challenges in the modern world if we do not supply the tools to help them achieve their full potential.
