First of all, a summary of recent activities:
Langholm Rotary and Hawick Rotary take turns visiting one another. This year Langholm were the hosts and five members from Hawick made the trip on the beautiful evening of May 7th. Once there they enjoyed good company, good food and an interesting presentation about the way Shelterbox has evolved, and is still evolving, since being started by Helston Rotary.
The following evening, a Quiz was held in the Evergreen Hall to raise fund in support of Hawick Rotary's work with local schools. Thirteen teams took part, with the team named 'Frank Place' and consisting of the Scott Family and Doug Telfer winning, with 85 points out of 100. This was a fun evening and £285 was raised.
At the Club's meeting on 14th May, members were entertained after their meal by Rotarian Tommy Mulvee. Tommy told how during Covid pandemic times he was encouraged to take up the guitar by fellow Denholm resident Kenny Spiers and now practises daily, playing at folk sessions each month at Fox & Hounds in Denholm and in Horse & Hounds at Bonchester. He played My Beautiful Girl, and sang along to Auld Jock (written by Alan Brydon), the Irish Pub Song, and Stardust.
On 15th May, six representatives of Hawick Rotary travelled across to Selkirk to join in with that Club's 50th Anniversary celebrations. There was a fine buffet meal and entertainment provided by guitarist pairing 'Jaunty Angle', by singer Imogen Hoppe, and by Selkirk Musical Theatre Company. Opportunity was taken to meet up and chat with friends from other Clubs on an excellent evening.
Then finally, after a particularly busy period, there was the Annual Charity Coffee Morning in the Evergreen Hall on Saturday 16th. A disappointing number of coffee-drinkers, but £258 was raised for international humanitarian charities.
