Judy Tyler - Way Down South

Now, which South might that be?

Last Thursday Judy Tyler gave an illustrated talk on a cruise through Antarctica. Having explained that the ship had to slow to ten knots whilst in Antarctica to protect wildlife, and the whales in particular, she showed a variety of photos of glaciers, icebergs and general views which gave an impression of the stunning scenery, and the heights to which it rose – around 8000 feet. The effects of the weather or climate change were also clearly evident in some of the glaciers which were seen to be close to calving (when ice breaks away from the main glacier).

Among the shots was evidence of the minerals present in the rocks, resources which are carefully protected by laws to prevent further exploration.

A stop at Port Lockroy gave a chance to send a postcard from the most southerly post office in the world. This arrived safely in six weeks and was passed round the meeting.

The talk ended with the ship returning to Cape Horn and going on to Ushuaia, the most southerly city in the world and the base for a visit to Tierra del Fuego.

After questions, Ron Smith gave an appreciative Vote of Thanks, complimenting Judy on the excellent quality of her photography.
