He and Judy had been on a cruise to the Falkland Islands and the Antarctic Peninsula. He started by explaining that many of his bucket list trips were at least in part because there were birds he particularly wanted to see. A cruise to Antarctica would, hopefully, provide two - albatross and penguins. On the Falklands they had made a long, very bumpy journey to Volunteer Point where a large colony of King Penguins is found along with Gentoo and Magellanic Penguins and not a snowflake in sight, although the weather was very windy, cool and showery. Despite the bleak weather there were photos of all three types of penguin with especially good views of the Kings who totally ignored the fact that tourists must keep six metres from the penguins.
The ship was not designed for ice breaking so had to keep a safe distance from icebergs and glaciers so penguin colonies around Antarctica tended to be quite distant but they did appear porpoising around the ship on their way to and from their colonies. He had taken many photos, most of which showed only bits of penguin or a splash, but he was able to show some successful photos of Gentoo and Chinstrap Penguins in midair.
There were also some photographs of albatrosses- so two more off the bucket list of birds.
