Hawick Rotarian attends High School event and reports back

George Thorburn and his wife Karin attended the Hawick High School Annual Burns Supper as guests representing the Hawick Rotary Club, The Buccleuch Bowling Club had kindly provided their clubrooms for the evening.

A well organised and excellent evening was enjoyed by around 80 people in attendance including teachers, family members and senior school pupils. Robbie Pringle Butchers provided and cooked the supper which included a Scotch Broth with lentils and an excellent haggis, neeps and tatties.

The evening was professionally chaired by senior pupils Joe Yallop and Carla Elliot. Mathew Rudkin, who was in the recent Rotary Music Competition, piped the Haggis in with perfect timing. The evening ran very smoothly and was entertained by well-known Teries, Davy Scott, Michael Aitken, Bernie Armstrong, Evelyn Armstrong and John Tait.

Hana Al Khoury toasted the lasses in rhyme and obviously named most of the lasses in his year with anecdotes that made them all laugh. The Reply to The Lassies however put him in his place as Cerys Cumming gave a witty and very well thought out reply,

The Deputy Head, Peter Beaton gave the vote of thanks, and the company sang Auld Lang Syne to end an excellent evening.

The staff and pupils involved in organising and running the evening are to be congratulated for a very well-run event.
