On 29th January, Hawick Rotarians met as two 'teams', the Community & Vocational group, and the International group.
Community & Vocational, led by Tommy Mulvee, discussed arrangements for their forthcoming Charity Quiz, to be held on Friday March 20th in Wilton Bowling Club, to raise funds for the Junior Section of Hawick Saxhorn Band.
International Committee however were without two prominent members, Jane Cox and Andy Tyler, so team member Ron Smith, who also serves as the Club's Youth Convenor, sidetracked them to be the judging panel for the local heat of Rotary's Young Photographer competition. Eight entries had come from Hawick High School at each of Intermediate and Senior categories. The theme of the competition this year is Happiness in Nature. After close consideration, Amber Foster, aged 17, was chosen as the winner of the Senior age group with her photo of a red-legged partridge, with Caitlyn Rae in second place with a photo of a bee investigating flower blossom. At the Intermediate level, Ula Linkevinciute was declared winner, with a very unusual photo of a snail's progress. Lily Matthews was in second place with an illustration of her dog lying happily on a bed of leaves.
Thanks are expressed by the Club to High School teacher Suzanne Alderson for the time and effort she puts into this competition.
