Hawick Rotarians, with valued assistance from members of Rotary Borderlands and from Peter Croan of the Galashiels Club, staged an event on Denholm Green, aiming to raise funds for ShelterBox. This is the charity, founded by members of Helston (Cornwall) Rotary in 2000, which raises funds to make up and send large green heavy-duty plastic tubs to areas of the world which have been affected by disasters, such as earthquakes, floods or war. Each kit includes a tent to house eight members of a family, cooking equipment, blankets, solar lights, water purifier, tools etc.. and costs £590.
Our event, staged alongside Denholm's car boot sale, attracted many visitors. We had a ShelterBox tent erected, alongside displays of the other equipment contained in the tubs, a tea tent and a bric-a-brac stall, and so far have raised £306 from the morning's activities. All of this money, with more which we hope to raise by selling some bric-a-brac items on ebay, will be passed to ShelterBox.
The weather was kind to us, and our photographs show the nature of the event.
