Teams from local Primary Schools gather to compete for Quiz Champions title

On Tuesday 18th March, seven teams from five of Hawick’s Primary Schools gathered at Hawick High School to take part in the local round of the Rotary Primary School Quiz.

In teams of four from P5 and/or P6, pupils from Burnfoot, Denholm, Drumlanrig, Trinity and Wilton schools worked their way through 60 questions on a variety of topics. The schools are obviously doing a good job as no team suffered a disaster and several achieved maximum marks in at least one round.

After some swift marking by members of Hawick Rotary, the results were declared with Drumlanrig just pipping Denholm for the runners-up spot and Wilton being crowned champions. The teams from Wilton (Callan Michie, Alfey MacKenzie, Flynn Dickson, Sari Wilson) and Drumlanrig (Kerr Ferguson, Nathan Wronski, Rennie McNeilage, Joshua Harris) will now move forward to compete in the Borders Area round and challenge for a place in the Scotland South final.

Speaking afterwards, Andy Tyler of Hawick Rotary, who had organised the event, thanked Hawick High School for providing the venue and the Primary Schools for all arriving promptly. He said he was impressed by all the teams’ knowledge and that it had been a pleasure to host such a cooperative group of children.

Ron Smith, Hawick Rotary's Youth Convenor, notes: 'Andy did a great job of setting up this event, which was run really efficiently. This is the first year in which we have staged the Primary Schools Quiz, and we would want to acknowledge the support given by the local headteachers.'
