On Wednesday 18th December, the local Hawick stage of Rotary's Young Musician competition took place in the Music Rooms at Hawick High School. Six pupils took part at this stage. They were Ryley Gibbon on drums, Ben McCutcheon on electric guitar, Eva McDuling singing, Matthew Rudkin on bagpipes, Daniel Singleton on electric guitar, and Carly Wolf on trombone. Judges were Drew Gibb, Gus Neilson and Roslyn Walker.
This was the first time Young Musician had taken place here for some years and the students were rather nervous. The judges attempted to put them at their ease by asking first about their instruments, and how long they had been playing them, before hearing renditions.
The outcome was that Carly Wolf (S1) was placed first and Daniel Singleton (S3) second.
After certificates and prizes had been handed over, cousins Ryley Gibbon (S2) and Matthew Rudkin (S1) joined up to play Highland Cathedral.
Hawick Rotary President Iain Smith complimented all those who had taken part, congratulated Carly and Daniel on their success and thanked Stacey Grieve and Leighann Crawley from Hawick High School's staff on their organisation of the event.
