ShelterBox
Last week, Hawick Rotary donated £500 to Shelterbox.
Shelterbox provides shelter, essential items and technical assistance to help some of the world’s most vulnerable people recover and rebuild their homes after disaster. ShelterBox adapt their support to the needs of each community, working together with those affected by disaster, often working in places that others don’t, making sure that they reach families who need support to take the next step in resuming their livelihoods.
So far Shelterbox has provided shelter to over 2.5 million people worldwide.
End Polio Now
Tuesday 24th October was World Polio Day.
In 1985, Rotary launched its PolioPlus program, the first initiative to tackle global polio eradication through the mass vaccination of children.
Rotary continues to raise funds to End Polio and to finish the job. Thanks to the generosity of the people of Hawick who have supported the Club’s many fundraising efforts over the years, Hawick Rotary Club has contributed more than £10,000 to the initiative since 1985.
The End Polio Programme has made tremendous progress since the Global Polio Eradication Initiative was launched: A 99.9% reduction in cases of illness caused by wild poliovirus; 3 billion children immunized; 125 countries where polio was endemic reduced to two — Afghanistan and Pakistan — with the virus contained in just a few districts and provinces.
But even just one case still represents one child’s life forever changed by polio. That’s why we must remain tenacious and keep our promise: We won’t stop until we know that no child will ever again experience the paralysing effects of polio.
