President Scott Elliot welcomed five
Selkirk Rotarians to last week's meeting of the Rotary Club to hear about a
project they undertook in February this year to Naga City, Philippines, which
was jointly funded by Hawick, Galashiels, Langholm, Melrose and Lauderdale
Rotary Clubs. Assisted by Grant Aid, £13,080 was raised and every last
penny was spent on the project. The Selkirk members took it in turn to
explain what was undertaken out there and this included building a toilet block,
supplying 24 new mattresses and 2 bunk beds to an orphanage of 31 children, visiting a
human milk bank, digging a deep well at a school with no running water, along
with other work carried out. They were assisted by local Rotarians from
Naga City and an extremely pleasant weekend was spent on a luxury island retreat
owned by one of the Rotarians. The four Selkirk Rotarians accompanying
President Ferdous Ahmed were Doug Forsyth, Les Rutherford, Eileen Easton and
Irene Strafford, and Pat and Ron Sutherland, Hawick, were also part of the
group. A party of 29 Naga City Rotarians are due to spend a reciprocal
visit to Selkirk on 20th August, 2018, such was the success of the initial
exchange.
Ina Cairns and Rosalyn Walker also attended the
meeting.
It was decided to cancel the coffee
morning due to be held on 19th May, 2018 due to the Royal wedding and 11th August will be considered instead.
