2019 St George's Day Celebrations

A day of fun and entertainment in Pinner featuring Ye Olde Wheelbarrow Race

Pinner’s annual festival of family fun and tradition celebrating Saint George’s Day took place on Sunday April 28th.

This colourful event is organised by Pinner Rotary for the benefit of the local community.

With the church bells ringing, the Mayor of Harrow, Councillor Kareema Marikar, led the Scouts’ Parade up the High Street where they renewed their Promise. Later she presented the prize to the winners of the traditional Village Wheelbarrow Race, Steve and Dan representing the Queen’s Head. Calling themselves ‘Tag you’re it’, they were the fastest team to negotiate the route through Pinner via the requisite beer drinking stops, while the team with the most outlandish fancy dress was ‘The Beer Babies’ from Nationwide Building Society.

The record crowds enjoying a day out, braving the cold wind, took full advantage of the children's rides and entertainment including Punch & Judy, folk dancing from English Miscellany, local band Simply Gray, a petting farm, face painting and hair braiding. A traditional ice cream van was in demand and stalls, local restaurants and the Queen’s Head catered for everyone’s needs.

President Steve Morrisby said

“The St. George’s Day Celebration and Wheelbarrow Race have become firm favourites in the Pinner calendar. Together they help to promote both Pinner and the wider Harrow borough. Charities supported by Pinner Rotary Club also benefit, this year we raised over £600."

"I’d like to thank all those who came, enjoyed themselves and gave their support to the various fund-raising activities of all the local organisations taking part. And, most importantly, special thanks go to Gibbs Gillespie Estate Agents, whose generous sponsorship made the day’s events possible”.
