News from Rotary in London
Following an arduous climb with other Rotarians from the London District, our District Governor Toni Finkel finally conquered the summit of the O2 Dome near North Greenwich in London. You can support Toni through http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/ToniFinkel On reaching "terra firma" once again, a slightly breathless Toni declared that the journey down was less tiring! The event was a fundraiser for Rotary's campaign to "End Polio Now". Whereas, when we launched the campaign in 1985, we were expecting one thousand cases per day, the total number of cases in 2015 was just 74, and so far this year there have been just two cases in Pakistan. The project is not coming to an end however, as there is still much to do. Contestants from all over London gathered in Redbridge College to decide who was the London Rotary Young Chef of the Year. Competition Judges John Liddle and Maurice Haskew had the invidious task, and The Worshipful the Mayor of the London Borough of Redbridge, Councillor Barbara White presented the trophies. With a substantial group of supporting parents and teachers, the contestants start their tour of the kitchens at 10am, and the competition proper started with the table lay-up. It was then into the kitchens for the serious business. Service of a main and dessert course for two people, had to be completed by 1pm. The complexity of the recipes chosen was amazing. One judge described how difficult it is to arrive in a professional kitchen, and start cooking for a competition. That said, every contestant managed their two courses, and all of them looked terrific.
