Our very popular annual "Youth Speaks - a Debate" competition took place on April 23rd, in which we celebrated the speaking, expression and presentational skills of the students of Hounslow, together with their ability to formulate and oppose ideas and opinions on their chosen subject. The event was thoroughly enjoyed by parents, friends and supporters of the teams, and students have been glowing about all it has done for their self-esteem and confidence - the standard of debate being incredibly high, with students debating with deliberation and passion, and the results being very close.
Each student was presented with a participation certificate by the organiser, Rtn Haydn Davies, and the Mayor of Hounslow, Cllr Amy Croft, who also presented each student with a Borough coat-of-arms broach, followed by the presentation of shields to the winning two teams, and medals to all winning students.
The results are:
Juniors: Winner - Kew House School
Best chairperson - St Marks Catholic School
Best Proposer - St Marks Catholic School
Best Opposer - St Marks Catholic School
Seniors: Winner - Kew House School
Best chairperson - St Mark's Catholic School
Best Proposer - Hounslow Youth Service
Best Opposer - Hounslow Youth Service
The diverse topics chosen for debate included: 'All criminals deserve a second chance', There is no point in studying Shakespear in school', 'Kindness is more dangerous than cruelty', 'Can money truly buy happiness', 'All children's stories should have happy endings', 'Should drug and vape testing kits be required on site of all schools and colleges', 'Eradicating competition would better society'.
Well done to all participating students.
