Gareth Baird is speaking on his work as a Crown Estate Commissioner

Gareth Baird, who amongst many other things, is Scottish Commissioner for the Crown Estate, addressed the Club last Thursday.
The Crown Estate came into being around 1760 when the Crown lands were passed to the State in exchange for an annual income.  These days the value of the Estate appears on the balance sheet at £13 billion and returned £305 million to the Treasury last year.
Gareth explained that the estate consists of various asset classes including urban developments, mostly in central London, marine estate with offshore renewables and income from cables and pipelines, Windsor Great Park and 360,000 acres of rural land.
Gareth gave a fascinating insight into the workings of The Crown Estate and was very open about future changes and how they might affect Scotland when responsibility for the Scottish Portfolio will move to Scottish Ministers in April 17.   This was proposed under the Smith Commission following the Independence vote in 2014.
As with much happening in government at the moment there is a great deal of uncertainty and in Gareth’s words “we shall just have to wait and see what happens”.

An enjoyable and informative talk thoroughly enjoyed by the club.
