How we run the Club

The Club has a wide range of activities and interests and needs a strong basic structure, but without ever losing the sense of fun and sharing that is at the heart of Rotary's approach serving good causes.

We have had for a long time a club membership in the mid-30s (in terms of numbers), making Duns one of the largest clubs in the Scottish Borders.  We are also part of a Rotary District, District 1020, which covers 63 clubs in southern Scotland. Through that we are affiliated to Rotary In Britain and Ireland (Rotary GB&I) and to its parent body, Rotary International, which is based in the USA but which has affiliated clubs across the globe.

Rotary International also runs a charitable arm known as the Rotary Foundation, and clubs are particularly expected to generate funds for it and to make use of those funds in developing worthwhile projects that are perhaps too big for one or two clubs on their own.

A President holds office from July to June and is supported by a Senior Vice President, or President Elect, who will take office after her/him and who is responsible for internal Club activities by chairing the Club Administration Committee. They are supported by a Secretary and Treasurer and by a Junior Vice President, who will become the Senior Vice President in the following Rotary year.

We divide the external work of the Club into 4 areas, each served by a Committee which organises support for projects and worthwhile causes and carries out fundraising activities to generate income for them.

The four Committees cover

Community - provides services and supports projects within the local community and fundraises for those purposes

International - identifies and supports worthwhile international projects and fundraises for them.

Youth Service - takes advantage of the wide range of youth-oriented Rotary projects and promotes them to local young people, both as individuals and in groups. In particular we seek to build partnerships with local schools to encourage the participation of young people in Rotary projects.

Foundation - this Committee focusses on generating funds for the Rotary Foundation but will also assist other Committees in identifying possible Foundation grants for projects the Club wishes to take forward.

Each committee has its own Chair and these and the other Club Officers together form the governing Council of the Club.

A monthly business meeting is held to enable members to discuss issues with the Council and to ratify Council decisions where appropriate.

The members of the current Council are to be found here.
