Members of Duns Rotary Club supported the group until it gained its formal constitution and was accepted as a partner by the Scottish Ambulance Service.
To become operational it had to procure official workwear from the NHS and Duns Rotary Club made a grant in March 2010 to enable the Group to proceed without delay and so establish the First Responder Service as soon as possible.
The Group's Chairman, Iain Lothian, has attended the Club on several occasions not only to accept the funding cheque from then President Andy Lester, as seen above with Dave Prentice, also a First Responder, and David Dickson, Scottish Ambulance Service Group Coordinator, but also to report on the Group's early deployment and then to give us an account in 2011 of its first year of operation. As Andy Lester said on presenting the cheque: "we are delighted to help The First Responders Group who are volunteers who may provide that vital lifeline until paramedics arrive at a medical emergency."
The Club is pleased that its intervention brought this service into being quickly and impressed with the contribution the volunteers have made to the health and well-being of local residents since the service was launched. Our congratulations to all those who have committed the time and energy to become volunteers and to make themselves available for call-out.
Our slideshow is of pictures the Group supplied of their training and the dummies (no insult intended!) that they work with.
