Karen Smith, Governor, HMP Dumfries.
Qualified as a Nurse and then a Midwife, karen worked in the NHS prior to joining SPS in 1987 as Head of Heath Care HMP and YOI, Cornton Vale. Karen has worked in a number of prisons in operational roles as Head of Health Care and Head of Offender Outcomes (HMP Barlinnie and HMP Shotts). She has worked extensively in HQ in 5 different Directorates in a number of different roles - Addictions Advisor, National Contracts Manager, Head of Offender Management, and Head of Operations and Public Protection. Karen held the position of Deputy Director of Operational Prisons and Divisional Head of Operational Services prior to taking up her post as Governor in Charge of HMP Dumfries in 2017.
Karen previosuly spent 2 years working at Scottish Government in Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Prisons as an Operational Inspector of Prisons.
