Christmas Story Competition 2025
Rotary Christmas Story Competition 2025
Rye & Winchelsea Rotary and Tenterden Rotary Clubs were delighted to invite 31 primary schools to take part in this year’s Story Writing Competition, asking for three stories from each year group, Years 1 to 6. In total, 26 schools participated – 10 from Rye & Winchelsea and 16 from Tenterden – producing an impressive 327 entries. These were spread across the year groups as follows: Year 1 – 39 entries, Year 2 – 43, Year 3 – 55, Year 4 – 78, Year 5 – 53 and Year 6 – 59.
The entries were carefully marked by volunteers from both clubs: Year 1 by Sarah Williams (Tenterden), Year 2 by Venetia Sanders (Rye & Winchelsea), Year 3 by Bill Ferguson (Tenterden), Year 4 by Martin Owen (Rye & Winchelsea), Year 5 by Bridgette Jefferis (Tenterden), and Year 6 by Roger Evans (Rye & Winchelsea). Prizes were awarded in each year group: First Prize £25, two Second Prizes of £20, three Third Prizes of £15, and Highly Commended awards of £10 – ensuring that every school that entered received at least one prize.
Collectors were encouraged to present the awards during school assemblies when returning the marked stories, with schools kindly taking photographs to capture the occasion – including the lovely images attached from Benenden School and High Halden School.
Overall, this has been a very worthwhile project, supported wholeheartedly by Rotarians and Friends of both clubs, truly reflecting the spirit of Rotary. Special thanks go to all the collectors and markers, and particularly to Janet Knuth of Rye & Winchelsea for her invaluable support. Gardner Crawley has kindly offered to coordinate the competition again next year, should the Clubs wish to continue this excellent initiative.
