Dalbeattie Rotary Club has its third Paul Harris Fellow, an honour awarded to those who demonstrate a shared purpose with the humanitarian and educational objectives of Rotary International and its motto of “Service above Self.” The Award is named after the Founder of Rotary International, Paul Harris, a Chicago lawyer, who, with three associates, established the international service movement in 1905.
The latest recipient of the Award in our Club is Douglas Kerr. The Fellowship has been awarded in appreciation of his pursuit of Rotary International’s ideals over many years of service. The Award recognises Douglas’s commitment to and involvement in Rotary International, and to Dalbeattie Rotary Club in particular, for nearly 30 years. Over and above his years of Rotary service, the Award recognises Douglas’s work in a wider sphere including (1) raising over £20,000 for charity through his 93 Islands initiative, (2) fund-raising for Mary’s Meals, (3) his many years as a Befriender with the Dumfries & Galloway Befriending Project, (4) his service as a Volunteer in Dumfries & Galloway Royal Infirmary and (5) his contribution to education through the Royal Highland Education Trust.
Our photographs show Douglas Kerr receiving his Award at our Club meeting on Thursday 31 March 2022, the presentation being made by “the other Douglas” in our Club, 2021-2022 President Douglas Irving.
Our Club members say resoundingly, "Congratulations, Douglas Kerr!"
