If those in the audience which almost filled the White Rock auditorium, remembering their own schooldays, were expecting to hear Nymphs and Shepherds or Where e'er You Walk, they were in for a big surprise.
Today's school choirs have a more liberal approach to the entertainment for such it was as well as a competition. Ten East Sussex Schools participated, thanks to the vision and organisation of the Rotary Club of Hastings.
With three hundred and thirty-five participants, even the mechanics of getting them to the theatre were ultra-complex. That all went smoothly was a credit to all concerned.
Sponsorship was by anonymous donors. A message of congratulation was received from renowned singer-actress Lesley Garrett and a substantial donation from the Wilhams Gp. Companies, St Leonards-on-Sea.
The distinguished judges, Hastings Musical Festival Director Molly Townson, composer and orchestral director Kenneth Roberts and international lecturer, and former bassist Peter Georgiadis faced a difficult task of determining the winner.
