33 sat down to lunch at Dunkerley’s on Monday, 23 of whom were club members, 7 were visitors from the RC of Folkestone, as well as one candidate for Induction into Rotary, the District Governor Peter West and the Assistant Governor Don Soppitt
Happily, the wine draw was won by Terry Cook-Davies from Folkestone.
The President, Paul Robbins, reported that the visit to Deal Castle last Thursday had been a great success; money raised at that event will go to the Salvation Army to help finance their Christmas Dinner for those in need. The total collected has not yet been announced.
It has been a busy week, as two days later, the club had a stall at the Deal Hospital Fête (see photo). The entire proceeds of £745 are being donated towards the new Accident and Emergency unit. The President especially thanked David Lister, Paul Blair and Edward Barkway for their particularly energetic efforts. Pat Heath relayed the thanks of Maureen Bane, on behalf of the Hospital.

Peter West, the District Governor, then spoke. He reported that Rotarians had provided the equivalent of £3m of voluntary work, helping with the floods in the North of England. He reminded everyone that the motto of this year’s President of the Rotary GB&I was “Rotary Serving Humanity”. He also commented that this year is the centenary of what is called Foundation, one object of which is the eradication of poliomyelitis throughout the World. The heartening news is that only 19 cases have been reported worldwide since January, and the two worst countries, Pakistan and Afghanistan, have had no cases of polio for at least two months. $1.25 billion is needed overall to finish the job. The DG has made the fight against polio his charity for this year, and to raise funds on the spot, he produced a little woolly bear, which members were encouraged to name for a donation. It raised just over £75.
Finally, Phil Goodwin was inducted by the President, and in his speech, he thanked everyone for welcoming him back to the Deal club after an interval of 23 years.
