Twenty two members were present with Ian Dunkerley, our President, in the chair. Eleven members were unable to make the meeting.
Our Secretary, David Lister, welcomed District Governor Ray Dixon and his wife Jenny and Past President of the South Foreland Club but now a member of the Dover Club Peter Sherred and his wife Mary as our guests.
After the meal, the Secretary reminded members that the next meeting on May 9th would be our AGM. He had attended the recent District Council meeting at which he heard that the motto for the next Rotary Year will be Rotary Serving Humanity. He also mentioned that so far this year that just 10 new cases of the wild form of Poliomyelitis have been identified in the whole world, which is a splendid result for all Rotary’s effort.
Pat Brown, our Almoner, welcomed back two of our members David Hannent and Keith Anderson who had been absent recently due to ill-health.
This week’s 200 Club Draw was won by Chris Danican to whom a £20 cheque has been sent and the bottle of wine was won by the District Governor’s wife.
John Utting has been working away organising our sponsored children’s cycle ride that takes place at Fowlmead on June 4th. This event will raise funds for the Send-a-Cow charity that provides livestock for African farmers. So far six of our eight local Primary Schools have expressed an interest in raising funds at this event.
Tony Nicholls reminded us that there will be a Beach Clean on Monday next, starting at Sandown Castle at 10 am.
Pat Heath spoke about the annual Sponsored Walk, run by our Club and the Inner Wheel Club of Deal, planned for June 12th.
District Governor Ray had not only attended the successful Boccia Tournament that our Club, along with the Dover, Sandwich and South Foreland Clubs, helped to organise last week but also the St. George’s Night dinner held at the Stone Hall in Dover last Saturday evening when some £1800 was raised for the Royal British Legion. He expressed his amazement as just what Clubs such as ours did both for the local community and nationally or internationally. He spoke about a new satellite club which he had attended. He concluded by mentioning the success of Rotary’s End Polio Now initiative. In the world so far this year there have been just 10 new cases - 2 in Afghanistan and 8 in Pakistan, which is long way down from the roughly 1000 new cases a day being reported worldwide when Rotary International set out to rid the world of polio by instigating a programme of immunisation some 30 years ago !
