Sponsored Cycle Ride

On Saturday 29 March 2008 - Sponsored Cycle Ride for the bike-a-Cow event.

Having weather-watched since the previous Monday, the Deal Interact club members were delighted with the weather on Saturday. Slightly ‘breezy’ but dry and sunny which also suited the teams of young cyclists from our eight local Junior schools in Deal, Walmer and Northbourne.

Fully kitted out with crash helmets, identity wrist-bands and sponsor sheets to be signed the waiting crowd of youngsters (and parents) could hardly wait to complete the ten laps of Fowlmead Cycle track needed in order to collect their sponsor money.

Deal Town Mayor, Cllr. Jim Cronk, started the ride at 10:15 and just under an hour later most of the cyclists (see pics!) had completed the course.

The organizing group of students from Castle Community Interact club: Sam Brown (President), William Burn, Michael Bushe, Rosie Kirk and Tristan Morgan, were also very pleased to have support from local PCSOs Gary Faulkner and Justin Marriott, St. John Ambulance personnel Rene, Tony, Janet, road-crossing supervisor, Mrs. Cowhig and an wish to record special thanks to the other Deal Rotarians and their wives who acted as circuit marshals with their two Interact club mentors: Rtn. Peter Rothschild and Rtn. David Reid.

The Interact youngsters hope to raise enough money to provide a Kenyan village with an already pregnant cross-bred cow, disease resistant and giving a high milk yield. The money will also provide for 5 years of veterinary care for the cows, further artificial insemination and a building to shelter the cows.

The event went off without mishap and a good time was had by all whilst raising money for a very worthwhile cause. The amount raised will not be known for quite some time as there is always a delay in holding an event and collecting all the cash in.

As usual, prints can be obtained at a very reasonable cost, or the original higher quality image can be emailed.

We trust parents will not object to having pictures of their children displayed here.
