Weekly Meeting 20 July 2015

This report is a combination of this and the previous week's happenings. This is because of other committments that prevented your webmaster publishing last week's report. It will therefore be a larger report because of the several evants that have been carried out over the past two or three weeks.

Firstly, your webmaster and his wife spent a very happy day at the Kent Show (although the journey to and from Detling was a nightmare). You may be interested to know that several Rotary clubs in the Maidstone district carry out a very efficient, and lucrative task of checking entry passes. This was one of the tasks that we were asked to support the previous week. We were also asked if anyone could spare two hours to do a shift to man the Rotary display where we met Rotarian Brian Portway, the editor of Rotary South East.

One guest at the meeting was visiting Rotarian David Rusman, Past president of the RC of Henley on Thames, the former club of PP Colin Richards.

Other guests were Harry Prescott making his third visit as a guest of Rtn John Morris ...

... Past President of the Inner Wheel Club of Deal, Liz Evans ...

... and Debbie Barry of the Deal Centre.

Liz, together with PP Ian Dunkerley, was attending to present a cheque to the Deal Centre for £1883.90, £1179.90 of which came from the proceeds of the annual sponsored walk that both clubs took part and the remainder from other sources including the 2014 Race Night. Debbie thanked both clubs for their support and said that the A La Carted meals service was started with the help of the Inner Wheel Club of Deal, and now provides 500 meals a week and has plans, with the help of the donation, to increase the number to 700 meals.

The previous week's business meeting was held in the evening at the home of the President where Graham Edwards was to receive a cheque for £1239.50 from the proceeds of the June 'Walk of Life' staged for Prostate Cancer Association (Kent). Graham was to give a talk about the signs and symptoms of prostate cancer and outlined the work of the association mentioning the equipment they have presented to local hospitals to help with the diagnosis of this type of cancer.

Rtn Carol Kewley reminded members that there will be an event outside Dunkerley's on Sundy 16th August. This poster has all the details.

There have been two recent events. Firstly the annual Bat and Trap competition between the Deal and Sandwich clubs which resulted in a win for Sandwich.

Secondly an excellent garden party in conjunction with the Inner Wheel was held at 355 London Road, Deal on Saturday 18th July with fantastic food provided by the ladies. A set of garden Jenga was provided for entertainment which naturally turned into a competition between the two clubs. The Inner Wheel won 2 to 1!

PP Pat Heath reminded members that next Monday will be the last date for donations of prizes for our tombola stall at the Deal Hospital Fete. He particularly stressed that no prizes should be brought on the day. Members attending should be at the hospital at 10:30am for ticket folding.

Rtn David Harding concluded the meeting with a short talk about the Kent Magazine for the Blind, an organisation in which he is heavily involved in all aspects. There are other talking newspapers such as the KAB one (it is recommended that you view this page that has fourteen stations to listen to plus their weekly magazine) but none quite as unique as the one that David is so much involved. The magazine has a soap opera Castlewick Light that has a great following and is just about to record episode 314! He invited others to join him in changing the lives of so many blind people.

There was no 200 Club draw this week but there was a wine draw resulting in a win for the secretary, David Lister.
