It was a very well attended meeting with 38 diners including a raiding party of six Rotarians from Dover.
Left to right these were Roger Knight, Patrick Gunzi, Peter Sherred, Don Soppit, John Hunnisett and John Richards.
John Hunnisett conveyed the greetings of his club and thanked the Deal members for their hospitality.
Also present was Linda Hannent, wife of David:
and Harry Prescott, a guest of Rtn John Morris, attending lunch for the second time.
Rtn Paul Robbins informed the club that Sir Nicholas Winton
who recently died at the age of 106, was a former president of the RC of Maidenhead. Sir Nicholas was responsible for saving the lives of 669 Czech children during WWII and was a truly remarkable man. In this video, he talks about why he joined Rotary and what he got out of it. You are urged to watch this.
The President remarked that he enjoyed the Handover evening and hoped all those that attended felt the same and gave thanks to the organisers of the evening, mainly PP Peter Rothschild.
The Kent County Show takes place this weekend at Detling showground. The show is a really good day out with masses of things to see and do. Local Rotary clubs always assist the checking-in procedure very effectively. The show takes place over three days from Friday where Rotary will be presenting a publicity stand. They are appealing for help on the Saturday when they are desperately short of helpers, this would be for just a two hour shift. Anyone doing this will be granted free entry to the show (normally £13 for advance bookings). Good value!
Rtn Carol Kewley reminded those present that the annual Bat and Trap competition between the Deal and Sandwich clubs takes place at Baypoint this Thursday. You are asked to attend at 6pm for 6:30pm so that the competition can commence early whilst there is good daylight. More details here.
PP John Utting also had a reminder; the planned Rotary/Inner Wheel garden party at 355 London Road takes place on Saturday 18th July. Tickets for this event are £10.00 which includes food and the first drink with subsequent drinks being only £1. There will be a raffle so donations of prizes will be very welcomed. More details of this here.
PP Peter Rothchild has taken on the task of Speaker Arranger and was happy to announce that the diary is full until the end of November. Anyone wishing to invite a speaker should confer with Peter first.
You are reminded that next week's meeting will be an evening meeting at the home of the President at 6 Paddock Close, Sholden. This is not a meeting where guests are invited because it is a business meeting. There will, however, be a speaker; Graham Edwards will be talking about the work of the Prostate Support Association (Kent) for whom the recent Walk of Life was staged. IPP Ian Dunkerley will be presenting a cheque from the proceeds of the walk, which, although poorly attended, did raise a considerable amount of money.
There was one 200 Club draw resulting in a win for Inner Wheel Member and Past President Dot Boardman.
The weekly wine draw was won by Michel Dourthe (again) who promptly donated it to the upcoming Deal Hospital Fete tombola stall. The fete is on the first Saturday in August. More prizes are still needed for this.
