Three visitors joined the club members for lunch at the monthly business meeting. Firstly visiting Rotarian Angela Griffin, a member of the RC of Maleny in Queensland, Australia joined us.
Angela's club, on the Sunshine Coast, publish a blog about their meetings that can be read here, if you wish.
The second and third visitors come as a job lot in the shape of father and son Peter and Robin Norris.
Peter was a Rotarian in his younger days and now his son is following in his footsteps by being inducted into the RC of Deal by President Ian Dunkerley. During his presidency, Ian has had the pleasure of inducting five new members.
Rotarian Robin Norris after induction.
Of course he doesn't get away without the obligatory pose with his new tabard!
David Harding, chairman of the membership committee, welcomed Robin and remarked that there is a possibility of a further three new members in the weeks to come.
The President announced the birthday of PP Mike Baxter that will take place the following day, 16th June. Mike shares his birthday with Fred Karlin.
Fred Karlin, AKA Frederick James Karlin was born on 16-Jun-1936 in Chicago, IL. USA. He died 6-Mar-2004
in Culver City, CA from an unspecified cancer. He was a musician of note who won an Oscar for his best-known song For All We Know. We are sure Mike would like to know that.
The President gave an account of a dinner he attended in Dover where the proceeds of the St. George's Day Dinner were given to the Royal British Legion's Poppy Appeal.
We have received an invitation from the RC of South Foreland to attend their Garden Safari they are hosting on Saturday 27th and Sunday 28th June at St. Margarets. Full details can be found on their poster here. It would be good of the Deal members to print this poster and display it in cars and windows.
Have you heard about the Rotary International Credit Card?
As our only official Credit Card, it has been carefully designed to promote Rotary International and provide great value with attractive rates and benefits to cardholders.
By choosing to use the Rotary International Credit Card, MBNA, the card issuer, will make contributions to the Rotary Foundation when you use the card for the first time and also every time you use the card at no extra cost to you. The global total from all cards is now just over USD$ 8 million.
Benefits to cardholders:
The annual sponsored walk took place on Sunday 13 June with members of the Rotary and Inner Wheel joining to raise funds for the Deal Centre.
Walking from the Deal Angling Club to Walmer Castle, the money so far is over £1000 with more to come from sponsors. A Great effort by all concerned.
The last event for this Rotary year will be the handover dinner when President Ian Dunkerley passes over his chain of office to Rtn Barry Baxter. PP Peter Rothschild is handling all arrangements (see here) and requests that all outstanding payments should be made by next week's meeting.
One event for next year has just been announced: the annual Bat and Trap competition between the Deal and Sandwich clubs will take place at Baypoint on Thursday 9th July. More here. Payment for this is requested next week — £13.00 (£2.00 cheaper than last year).
Incoming President Barry Baxter has confirmed that Monday 13th July will be the first of the evening meetings at 6pm for 6:30pm. This will be at his home in Sholden and will be a business meeting.
And another event you will not want to miss in July is a garden party in the grounds of our secretary. This will be from 4pm to 8pm on Saturday 18th July. The date is subject to change because it probably clashes with the Antiques Roadshow at Walmer Castle where several of our members may be attending in a stewarding role.
July looks to be a busy month already; even busier for those that like to attend the County Show at Detling on Friday, Saturday and Sunday 10, 11 and 12th July. Friday would be a good day to go if you would like to see the Red Arrows.
PP David Hannent, the chair of next year's Entertainments Committee, announced that there is still a vacancy for one person on his committee.
He is planning a trip to the Tower of London for one of their immensely enjoyable tours.
To get a preview of what to expect, see this You Tube video, part one of four. The Yeoman Warden's very dry humour is a joy to behold; it is a 'must see' video. The day chosen is Wednesday 7th October.
The last planned event will be on 16th August from 12:30pm when Rtns Carol Kewley, Robert Walker and David Harding will be performing some war songs on the area outside Dunkerleys.
The weekly wine draw was won by PP Pat Heath and the 200 Club draw by Liz Evans, President of the Inner Wheel club.
PP Tony Nicholls and his wife Vicky are great supporters of the 'Deal with It' campaign whose community-minded activities are many-fold. One such task they undertake three times a year is a 'beach clean'. This photo is of their latest foray on 8th June.
You will note that Tony uses this opportunity to raise the profile of Rotary with his tabard. If you think this is something you would like to do for the community, then join them for the next Beach Clean which will be at the Sandown Castle end of the beach on Sunday 5th July starting at 10am. All welcome.
