Members and guests of Bexhill Rotary Club enjoyed a thought-provoking speaker meeting at the Cooden Beach Hotel on Tuesday 16 June, when author and researcher Andy Thomas gave an illustrated talk on the enduring mystery of crop circles.
Widely regarded as one of the UK’s leading researchers and most prolific authors on the crop circle phenomenon, Andy has spent more than three decades investigating unexplained subjects with a measured and balanced approach. His work spans crop circles, folklore, history, paranormal reports and wider “mysteries and histories”, and he is known for encouraging open-minded but careful discussion rather than sensationalism.
During the evening, Andy traced the history of crop circle reports, explored the striking geometry found in many formations, and discussed the continuing debate surrounding their origins. He explained that while many crop circles have been shown to be man-made art installations or deliberate hoaxes, others have prompted continuing interest because of their scale, complexity, timing and reported physical anomalies in the affected crops.
Rather than presenting the subject as a simple argument between believers and sceptics, he invited the audience to consider the evidence, the artistry and the cultural fascination that have kept crop circles in public discussion for decades.
The talk prompted lively interest among Rotarians, combining local relevance, historical context and visual examples of some of the phenomenon’s most intricate designs.
Members thanked Andy for an informative and engaging presentation that encouraged curiosity while recognising the need for critical investigation.
