Club members and family travelled back in time to the days of steam visiting Brede Steam Giants Water Works. Opened in 1904 with 2 wells on the main site 275 feet deep. The pumping station was built with the intention of providing 1,000,000 gallons of water to Hastings. It was quickly evident there had been an over estimation and the supply dropped to 500,000 gallons.
The Rotarians were given a guided tour around the site by 2 very knowledgeable volunteer staff members keeping all engrossed for 2 hours.
The tour was rounded off with a tour around a nuclear bunker built on site in the early 1990’s. The shelter was built as a fall out shelter for workers at the site so a water supply would be maintained for any survivors of a nuclear attack.
