President Paul visited Senlac Scouts at the 9th Bexhill Scout Hut in Wainwright Road on the evening of the 29th January to present a cheque for £400. This money from recent fundraising activities is to help with the cost of 10 Scouts and Explorers going to an international scouting jamboree being held in West Virginia in the USA from 22nd July to 2nd August next year. These 10 will be attending the jamboree along with many other scouts from across Sussex and the UK and around the world. The cost for each person attending this major jamboree works out at £3,670 with money coming from various sources including grants and scouting fundraising so our £400 donation will be a useful addition to the funds needed for the 2019 trip of a lifetime for these Scouts and Explorers many of whom have not been abroad before.
It all started last November when the Scouts and Explorers attended a selection weekend where they had to demonstrate their ability to work in a team and show initiative and resilience. The selected 10 now have the task of raising just over £2,000 each, they will do this as both individuals and as a group. In addition, the 10 will spend the next 18 months training and working as a team to prepare for this adventure of lifetime.
President Paul when presenting the cheque gave a brief outline of how Bexhill Rotary Club raises its funds and some examples of the sort of causes donations are given to. In response, Elaine Gausden, District Commissioner for Senlac Scouts, thanked Bexhill Rotary Club for the donation of £400 and thanked President Paul for his visit and added, “It made it real for the children and made them realise the huge task they have in front of them!”
