Litter Picking - World Environmental Day 2024

Helping tidy our local area

WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY 2024

This year at Rotary Beckenham, we decided to do something different. We stepped outside our comfort zone and joined forces with Mencap in Norman Park to litter pick in this tree lined park.

It was a sunny if somewhat chilly day and at first there appeared to be very little litter.

However, once we grew accustomed to the target we found a lot of small pieces of silver paper, cigarettes ends, crisp packets, sweet wrappers and drink cans.

Surprisingly, the sites that appeared to have most litter were near wastepaper bins, benches and, the car parks.

With more than 25 people helping, it wasn't long before we had a good haul and we headed back to the lodge, where Caroline and her staff laid on tea and cakes.

An additional attraction at the lodge was a pre-loved plant table. The price of each plant was calculated in food for the food bank ... so one plant cost one tin of fruit salad!

For those who did not have food in their pockets or handbags -  donations were accepted by card reader and all the proceeds will be taken to the BROMLEY FOOD BANK, which covers the borough.

It was a lovely day in the fresh air, tidying up the environment, making new friends and helping those less fortunate than ourselves and we plan to repeat this event towards the end of the summer.

If you have seedlings popping up in your garden - save them for our plant stall - and watch this space for the date.
