Rotary Friendship Hedge

Dec 2017 - the planting party with 120 whips.

Five native species form the hedge

On 2nd December 2017, members and friends from the Rotary clubs of Beckenham and Langley Park planted 120 whips of five species of English tree to form "The Rotary Friendship Hedge". The five species that comprise the hedge are -  dogrose, hawthorn, hazel, crab apple and dogwood

The planting was in response to the challenge from Rotary International President Ian Risely, "to plant a tree for every Rotarian in the world".

The President challenged every Rotary club to make an environmental difference by planting a tree for each of its members between the start of the Rotary year on 1st July and "Earth Day" on 22nd April 2018.

“It is my hope that the result of that effort will be far greater than the environmental benefit that those 1.2 million new trees will bring,” Riseley said. “I believe the greater result will be a Rotary that recognizes our responsibility not only to the people on our planet, but to the planet itself.”  Trees remove carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases from the air, which helps to slow global warming.
