We were delighted to welcome our guest speaker, Pierre, a remarkable 19-year-old who shared his journey as a student and his experiences in creating and managing a Formula 24 team project across two local schools. Pierre and his young aspiring team took a dream and turned it into a reality by putting a car on track at Goodwood, competing against other national schools. Pierre spoke about the valuable skills he’s gained along the way, from teamwork and leadership to problem-solving, as well as his recent involvement with community radio station Purbeck Sounds in Swanage.
We also heard about the great platform Purbeck Sounds are giving young people by helping them gain valuable experience in media and radio, all while delivering a variety of shows that continue to attract the interest of locals to include local history, movies, art, music, community events and so much more.
A key theme of Pierre’s talk was the importance of feeling supported as a teenager from those that have trodden the path before, and he talked about the social pressures our young members of our community face, especially in this new digital age. Pierre highlighted the encouragement he has received from teachers, mentors and organisations such as Rotary, and shared his belief that many other young people would benefit greatly from the support of groups like ours. An inspiring reminder of the impact we can have on the next generation.
Great company, great conversation and a great cause, everything a Rotary evening should be!
