On a lovely sunny warm evening at Swanage Sailing club, we were delighted to welcome Dr Shah to our meeting to talk to us about how we can better look after our most important organ - our skin.
Dr Shah started by running through some of the more common skin conditions that many people will be familiar with. Although some of these, such as acne, are more commonly associated with younger people, it was stressed that it can affect people at all ages. Moisturising is key, and important for treating many of these conditions as well as the continued wellbeing of our skin.
She then focussed a little more on skin cancer, explaining the different types and how survival rates are better than they used to be and greatly improved by early diagnosis.
The second half of the talk concentrated more on what we can all do to protect ourselves from damage. It went without saying that covering up is the best protection, but it was also confirmed that creams have their place provided they are high factor and applied regularly and copiously!
There were several questions from the floor and we certainly all learned something new from the talk (including the fact that products that look and smell nice are probably not very good for us, so boring is best!!).
On behalf of the group, Rotarian Chris LeFevre thanked Dr Shah for a very interesting and thought-provoking talk.
