On Wednesday 18th March, Swanage and Purbeck Rotary celebrated the 50th anniversary of its foundation with a gala dinner at the Isle of Purbeck Golf Club. Members and guests enjoyed an opportunity to reflect on the way Rotary had contributed to the community and supported international projects over half a century. Current President David Chalcraft reflected on what had been achieved by a relatively small group of people over the years. "An event like this reminds you that when people are committed they can make a real difference".
Pride of place for the evening went to Harry Parsons, the only remaining founder member of the club, who spoke eloquently about how the club had changed over the years. Initially being formed by businessmen in Swanage, it had now transformed to reflect our overall community. Harry said that one very welcome change had been the introduction of women Rotarians, which had taken the club forward by utilising all the talent available. Whilst much had changed, Harry said there were some things that hadn't altered. "Our motto of 'Service Above Self' is still as valid today as it was in 1959" he reflected.
