It was less than 2 years ago that Helen otter wrote to the Carnival Committee in Swanage asking about accommodation for seriously injured servicemen in the town. Her family had often visited the town for holidays but since her son Jack had been seriously injured in Afganistan they were struggling to find suitable accommodation.
The reaction was immediate and a group was formed to raise funds for a suitably adapted caravan to be provided in the town. This snowballed until plans were put in place to provide a permanent cabin in Herston - the project became known as Heroes Haven.
Swanage rotary have raised funds for the project - as have many groups and individuals in the town and beyond. Today it was with great pride and happiness that Jack Otter was able to able to perform the opening ceremony.
Swanage Rotary President Mick Beck was delighted to be there to share in the ceremony. "I think it's wonderful that Jack could be with us today" said Mick. "there is something special about being able to meet a very brave young man and to thank him for what he has done on behalf of all of us".
Neil Hardy who was responsible for the fundraising for Heroes Haven in Swanage Rotary was also keen to stress his admiration for Jack and his family. He also highlighted the impact it had made on our community. "There is no doubt that Jack's story touched the heart of a great many people in our community" said Neil. "It's been a great source of pride that we have responded and been able to provide what you see today".
Mick Beck was also keen to stress the great work done by Steve Churchill and the Heroes Haven team in completing the project. "In simple terms if they hadn't of stepped up this wouldn't have happen" said Mick. "We were proud to play our part but they deserve the real credit."
