What a truly unforgettable evening we all enjoyed at The Etches Museum as members, friends, and guests of Swanage and Purbeck Rotary came together to celebrate the remarkable 100th birthday of Sir David Attenborough, a man whose voice, passion, and dedication to the natural world have inspired generations across the globe.
Set in one of Dorset’s most fascinating museums, the evening was filled with warmth, reflection, and admiration for a national treasure whose work has transformed our understanding of wildlife, conservation, and our planet itself.
Guests were welcomed into the museum for a wonderful evening of celebration, conversation, and shared appreciation of Sir David’s extraordinary life and achievements. Surrounded by incredible exhibits that tell the story of Earth’s ancient past, it felt especially fitting to honour someone who has spent a lifetime helping humanity better understand both the beauty and fragility of the natural world.
The atmosphere throughout the evening was fantastic, with members enjoying excellent company, engaging discussions, and a shared sense of gratitude for the impact Sir David Attenborough has had on all our lives. From his groundbreaking documentaries to his tireless advocacy for conservation and environmental awareness, Sir David’s influence reaches far beyond television, inspiring action, curiosity, and hope for future generations.
A special thank you goes to Rotarian Jane McSharry who was instrumental in organising the event working closely alongside Luke M Luke from Planet Purbeck and her tireless and dedicated team of Rotarians who magnificently supported her both prior to and on the night itself.
Grateful thanks all go to the following for giving up their valuable time to make the evening extra special:
- Dr Steve Etches MBE, Sir David’s co-star in ‘Attenborough and the Giant Sea Monster’
- Sue Western, Producer & Scriptwriter for Sir David Attenborough
- Sam Stewart, drone wildlife photographer whose Studland & Old Harry Rocks footage featured in Sir David’s last ever location shoot.
- Our amazing chef of choice, Steve Townsend for his 'pantastic' Paella and to Lindsey also.
Also, a huge thank you to all volunteers and everyone who attended and helped make the evening such a success.
Finally, a very warm thank you to The incredible Etches Museum, for being such a perfect and welcoming venue for this very special occasion.
Events like these remind us of the importance of community, fellowship, and coming together to celebrate people who have made a profound difference in our world.
Happy 100th Birthday, Sir David Attenborough, and thank you for a century of inspiration.
