ROTARY CLUB OF RYDE
CLUB BULLETIN NOVEMBER 2015
As we get older is it more or less dopamine to the brain that makes us feel as if time is going more quickly? I think I must have missed Summer and Autumn as within four weeks it will again be Christmas time, mistletoe and wine etc although the nation still tends to bolster Noddy Holder’s pension fund more than Cliff’s.
On 24 & 25 October we had another successful weekend at Busy Bee with the crocus polio eradication collection. Many thanks to Mr & Mrs Leslie who also allowed us to have a shoe box appeal display in the shop.
On 5 November, in spite of serious doubts about the weather, several hardy Rotarians donned their waterproofs and marshalled the Haylands School firework display. The ever grateful Governors donated £200 to us for charitable giving.
We have had several interesting speaker meetings over the last two months, a visit to the Fort Victoria Planetarium in October and an Italian evening at the Isle of Wight College restaurant in November.
The Christmas supermarket collections will soon be upon us, Co-op Ryde on 4 & 5 December and Tesco Ryde on 22 & 23 December, when we will again be appealing to the generosity of the public to donate in the knowledge that all the funds raised will go to local charities and good causes. Festive accoutrements at the ready. Hopefully before next year’s collections the replica music organ will be fully refurbished and ready for another 15 years sterling service.
The annual President’s Dinner will be held on 13 February at Hotel Ryde Castle where Rotarians, partners and friends can wine and dine before dancing the night away to the encouragement of the DJ. Congratulations President Ken, not long to go!The ever popular quiz will take place on 18 March at Wootton Community Centre and all funds raised will again go to Rotary’s Foundation Charity.
Looking further ahead in 2016 we have decided to have one big Summer fundraising event on 5, 6 & 7 August. It will be a combination of the successful 2014 & 2015 Party on the Green and the August Bank Holiday 1960s weekend. The entertainment envisaged for this weekend will appeal to local families and visitors and include arena acts, magic shows, musical entertainment, competitions, displays, exhibits, classic cars, craft stalls and charity stalls. There will also be a tea tent with delicious locally made food and a real ale tent. However, the plans are dependant on outside funding, without which the event will have to be drastically curtailed, so if you know of any businesses, organisations or individuals who might be interested in sponsoring us can they please contact: Ryde Rotarian Mike Jukes tel: 01983 874825, email: michaeljukes@btinternet.com
