Club bulletin February 2015

It has been four years since I last produced a bulletin so, having volunteered again, I am pleased to welcome you to this February 2015 edition. As in the past, I will start each bulletin with an editorial and this month's topic is leadership and management.

Management is about getting things done efficiently. It is a mechanical process more about results than people. Leadership is about inspiring people to give of their best through example, support, communication, passion and a commitment to making a difference, and I hope that these skills are as relevant in organisations like Rotary as they are in business.

Past events

It seems a long while ago, but what a fantastic amount we raised from the Christmas supermarket collections, in spite of the last minute change of dates at Tesco. It shows that although the general public is bombarded by charity collections, especially at Christmas, Rotary can still be trusted to distribute their donations wisely.

A Talk by Alan Marriott, Editor County Press, was a positive step to help raise the profile of all the Rotary Clubs on the island. I look forward to feeding many articles to the County Press as part of our plans to improve awareness of Rotary to potential donators and prospective new members.

Future events

On 24 February we have a talk by Martin Simpson (The Fossil Man) and a visit by Cowes Rotary Club.

The Club's 90th Charter Night is at the Royal Victoria Yacht Club on Saturday 28 February and with 60+ attendees it should be a special evening. Roll on the 100th!

The ever popular annual Quiz is at Wootton Community Centre on 13 March and there is still time to enter a team. Please contact Mike Turner your club needs you.

Some advance notice of the Father's Day triathlon event from Waterside Pool on Sunday 21 June. We are still in the early stages of planning but please ask family, friends, work colleagues, clubs and organisations to enter a team. 50% of funds raised will go to Prostate Cancer research, 25% to Waterside Pool and 25% to Ryde Rotary charities. I will be distributing posters and information shortly but teams can contact me for entry details.

More next month.

Kind regards.
